Our earlier tweet on the proxy war between nuclear-armed superpowers has aged too well. We now have a situation where the supposed proxy—arguably with Western intelligence support or at least the knowledge and approval—has struck part of Russia’s nuclear triad, undermining treaties designed to prevent nuclear escalation. The Russian bombers were vulnerable to attack precisely because the treaties stipulated they would be placed in the open, visible to the other party. This attack has set a dangerous precedent and, if we are to trust the words of the renowned US economist, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, we’ve never been closer to nuclear Armageddon.
