
Dr. Antonio Sanfilippo

Biography
Dr. Antonio Sanfilippo is Chief Scientist at the Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI), where he leads the Energy Management Program. He has been awarded several grants from the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and was presented with the 2020 Qatar Innovation Leadership Award by the World Innovation Congress. Under his leadership, the QEERI Energy Management team has established capabilities that have become key reference points for local and international stakeholders, including a network of solar monitoring stations and a microgrid testbed.
Prior to joining QEERI, Dr. Sanfilippo was Chief Scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where he received the 2008 Laboratory Director’s Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. At PNNL, he led research projects for the Department of Homeland Security, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and a laboratory initiative on predictive analytics.
Dr. Sanfilippo has also held positions as Research Director in the private sector, Senior Consultant at the European Commission, Research Supervisor and Group Manager at SHARP Laboratories of Europe, and Research Associate at the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge. He holds a Master’s degree from Columbia University (US), and a PhD from the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.
